Learn About Your Screening Options This National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Schedule your breast cancer screening this October.

It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to educating the public about the realities of this devastating disease.  One of the main goals of this month is to encourage people to get an annual breast cancer screening.  This October, here are some of the breast cancer screening methods that you should look into.

  • Mammograms

Mammograms are the most well-known breast cancer screening test.  This screening method uses x-rays to check breast tissues for tumors or other abnormalities that are too minute to detect via touch.  Women between the ages of 45 and 54 are advised to get annual mammograms.  Once you hit age 55, you can schedule a mammogram every two years.  Women who are at a higher risk for breast cancer should speak to their doctors about receiving this screening test earlier on in their lives.

  • Clinical Breast Exams (CBE)

During a clinical breast exam, your physician will feel around your breasts and underneath your arms for lumps or other irregularities.  This screening method can be administered to both women and men and is the most common screening method for women under the age of 45.

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI screenings are reserved for individuals who have a particularly high risk of developing breast cancer.  For instance, women with the BRCA1 or 2 gene mutation, a strong family history of breast cancer, or certain genetic syndromes (such as Cowden or Li-Fraumeni) might receive MRI breast cancer screenings.  This type of screening method isn’t recommended for individuals with a low to moderate risk of developing breast cancer because it is more expensive and invasive than other methods.
