Observing Senior Eye Health Month

How to take care of yourself this Senior Eye Health Month.

August is Senior Eye Health Month.  Naturally, this month is dedicated to encouraging those over the age of 60 to start taking their eye health seriously.  While many of us who wear glasses and contacts are already in the habit of scheduling regular eye exams, the need for these check-ups becomes more pressing as you hit age 60.  This is because there is a considerable number of age-related health issues that can cause vision loss if not addressed quickly.  The best way to catch these problems early on is with an annual eye exam.

Some of the treatable eye conditions that affect older adults include the following:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glaucoma- increased pressure inside the eyeball, which can damage the optic nerve and cause partial and even full vision loss if left untreated.
  • Age-related macular degeneration- affects the center of the retina and can cause the degeneration of central vision while retaining peripheral vision.
  • Cataracts- clouding of the normally clear lens on the eyes, making vision partially obscured and fuzzy.

In honor of this Senior Eye Health Month, it’s important that you schedule your annual eye exam today.  Doing so will allow your optometrist to treat the conditions listed above.  Additionally, examining your eyes can also alert your optometrist to other health conditions, such as diabetes.
