Preserve Your Body with Proper Desk Set-Up Tips

Learn how you can properly set up your workspace.

If you work a desk job, then you might not think about the health risks that you face every day.  However, doing repetitive tasks and consistently sitting in awkward positions can cause significant wear and tear to your body.  One way to avoid these types of workplace injuries is by taking steps to properly set up your workspace.  Here are some tips to get you started.

Chair

If you work an office job, then you probably spend the majority of your day sitting in the same chair.  That’s why it’s important to make sure that you are using your chair ergonomically.  To start, you should adjust the height of your chair so that your feet can rest flat on the ground and your knees are equal to, or slightly lower than your hips.  Additionally, your chair should recline at a 100°-110° angle.  Your upper and lower back should also be supported.  Try using chair cushions to frequently adjust your position.

Computer Monitor

The position of your computer monitor and other desk items can also have a huge impact on the condition of your body.  Your monitor should be directly in front of you and positioned above your keyboard.  The top of you monitor should be 2-3 inches above your seated eye level and you should sit at least an arm length away from your screen.  Next, important documents should be placed between your keyboard and monitor, or next to your monitor for easy reading.  Finally, your phone should be positioned within easy reach.

Pauses and Breaks

Regardless of how well you set up your workspace, sitting in the same position for too long will have a negative impact on your health over time.  That’s why it’s so important to take frequent breaks to get your blood circulating.  You should take a break about every 30-40 minutes and make sure that you spend your lunch breaks away from your work area.  You can avoid eye fatigue by periodically looking away from your monitor and refocusing them on something in the distance.  Additionally, you can rest your eyes by covering them for 10-15 seconds, before going back to your work task.
