The Summer Isn’t Over Yet! Keep These Sun Safety Tips in Mind.

If you plan to head out into the sun while the days are still long, don’t ignore these sun safety tips.

Although we’re over halfway through August, it’s not time to put away the sunscreen just yet! In California, we get summer well into September. That’s great news for your pool plans, but it isn’t as ideal for your skin. If you plan on soaking up the last bits of summer, use these sun safety tips to make sure your skin doesn’t soak up anything harmful.

  • Use sunscreen. While this tip is technically a no-brainer, it’s easy to forget about sunscreen application in the middle of summer fun. Be extra diligent to avoid the present pain of a sunburn and future, more serious issues like melanoma. You should choose one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and apply 15 minutes before you head outside so your skin can absorb it. Then reapply every couple hours at a minimum.
  • Layer up. Layers aren’t just for cold weather. If you’re heading to the beach, consider putting some extra clothing over your swimsuit. A lightweight, tightly woven shirt and/or pants will help keep the sun off your skin. At the very least, don a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off the sensitive skin of your face.
  • Be strategic. The sun is at its most direct between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If possible, plan outdoor activities for earlier in the day or later in the evening. You won’t have to put as much work into protecting your skin if you do!
